The place
About Hamata
Hamata is the far southern end of the Egyptian Red Sea, and going there is the point. It is the departure town for Sataya Reef, widely called Dolphin House, a horseshoe of reef with a sheltered lagoon where a resident pod of spinner dolphins rests during the day.
The Qulaan mangroves nearby are one of the few mangrove stands on this coast, a shallow, still, khaki-green landscape that looks nothing like the rest of the Red Sea.
When to go
Boat days depend on sea state more than season. Calmer conditions are typical from late spring through autumn.
Getting there
Marsa Alam International (RMF) is the nearest airport, around two hours north by road. Most visitors come down for the day rather than staying.
Good to know
- The dolphins at Sataya are wild and resting. Responsible operators keep swimmers out of the lagoon itself and never chase the pod.
- It is a long day from anywhere. Expect an early start and a late return.
