The place

About Dendera

The Temple of Hathor at Dendera is one of the best-preserved temple complexes in Egypt, and the reason to come is the ceiling. Cleaning over recent decades stripped centuries of soot from the hypostyle hall and brought back the original paint: deep blues, ochres, and the astronomical figures running the length of the roof.

It is a comparatively late temple, largely Ptolemaic and Roman, which is part of why so much of it survives. The crypts and the roof chapels are usually accessible and are worth the climb.

When to go

October to April, for the same reasons as Luxor.

Getting there

Dendera sits near Qena, north of Luxor, and is almost always visited as part of a longer day rather than on its own.

Good to know

The crypts are narrow and low; they are not comfortable if you dislike enclosed spaces.
The colour is the point, so a torch and patience help more than a camera.
