The place

About Aswan

Aswan is the softest of the Nile cities. The river widens and breaks around granite islands, feluccas work the current, and the pace drops noticeably compared to Luxor or Cairo.

The Temple of Philae, dedicated to Isis, was moved stone by stone to Agilkia Island when the High Dam raised the water behind it, and is reached by boat. Abu Simbel, Ramesses II's rock-cut temples with the four colossal seated figures, lies roughly 280km further south and was relocated in the same rescue effort.

Nubian culture is present here in a way it is not further north, in the villages on the west bank and on Elephantine Island.

When to go

November to March. Aswan is hotter than Luxor in summer.

Getting there

Aswan has an airport, and the overnight train from Cairo terminates here. Abu Simbel is a long road transfer or a short flight.

Good to know

Abu Simbel convoys and flights leave very early; it is usually a pre-dawn start.
Twice a year the sun aligns to reach the inner sanctuary at Abu Simbel, and the town fills accordingly.
Feluccas are wind-powered and unhurried by design; allow more time than the distance suggests.
