The place

About El Quseir

El Quseir is one of the oldest ports on the Red Sea. For centuries it was the crossing point for pilgrims heading to Mecca and for goods moving between the Nile and the sea, and the Ottoman fortress above the harbour was built to control exactly that traffic. The old town is small enough to walk in an afternoon: coral-block houses, a handful of mosques, the old church, and a working waterfront that has not been rebuilt into a resort strip.

What keeps divers coming is the reef. The house reefs here start close to shore and drop quickly, so a lot of the diving is done without a boat at all. It is quieter than Hurghada and less developed than Marsa Alam, which is the appeal and also the reason most visitors base here and travel out for day trips.

When to go

Diving runs year-round. Water is warmest from July to September and coolest in February, when a wetsuit matters. October to April is the comfortable window if you are also heading inland to Luxor, where summer afternoons are punishing.

Getting there

Marsa Alam International (RMF) is the closest airport, roughly 80km south. Hurghada International (HRG) is about 140km north and often has more flights. Both are a straightforward coastal road drive.

Good to know

The old town is compact and best seen on foot; there is no need for transport once you are in it.
Luxor day trips from here leave very early, often before dawn, because of the drive across the Eastern Desert.
Modest dress is appreciated around the mosque and the older residential streets.
