The place

About Port Ghalib

Port Ghalib is a purpose-built marina town rather than an old settlement, which makes it an unusually easy base: the promenade, the berths, the shops and the restaurants are all within a short walk, and the airport is minutes away rather than an hour.

Most of what happens here happens on the water. Boats leave the marina for the reefs and bays north and south along the coast, and the evening habit is a slow walk around the harbour once the heat drops.

When to go

Comfortable most of the year. Summer midday heat is real; the town comes alive in the evening.

Getting there

The closest point of arrival in the whole region: Marsa Alam International (RMF) is only a few kilometres away.

Good to know

Boat departures from the marina tend to be early morning.
It is a modern development, so it feels different from El Quseir or the older Red Sea towns. That is a matter of taste rather than quality.
