The place

About Safaga

Safaga is a working port first and a resort second. It is best known for two things: wind, which has made it one of Egypt's better windsurfing and kitesurfing spots, and its black sand, which has a long-standing local reputation for treating skin and joint conditions.

It is also the cruise port that serves Luxor, so on some days the town is busy with coaches heading inland and quiet again by evening.

When to go

The wind is most reliable in spring and summer, which is what the board crowd comes for. Autumn and winter are calmer and better suited to diving and fishing.

Getting there

Hurghada International (HRG) is roughly 60km north, an easy coastal drive.

Good to know

Wind conditions vary sharply by the hour; local operators will tell you honestly whether a session is on.
The port is industrial, so the pleasant stretches of coast are north and south of the town rather than in it.
