The place
About Cairo
Cairo is loud, enormous and worth the effort. The Giza plateau sits on the western edge of the city, close enough that the pyramids appear at the end of ordinary streets. The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the last of the ancient wonders still standing, and the Sphinx sits below it at the end of Khafre's causeway.
Historic Cairo is the other half of a visit: the medieval quarter around Khan el-Khalili, the mosques and madrasas along al-Muizz street, and the churches and synagogue of Coptic Cairo, which sit within a few hundred metres of each other.
When to go
October to April is most comfortable. Summer is hot but manageable if you start early.
Getting there
Cairo International (CAI) is the country's main hub. From the Red Sea coast it is a long road transfer or a short domestic flight.
Good to know
- Entering a pyramid is ticketed separately and involves a steep, low, hot climb; it is not for everyone.
